The Big Summary

So after 405 days on the road, our trip is over and we are back in London; adjusting to not living out of a backpack, having a routine and waking up in the same bed every day. The trip was incredible and we loved every minute of it. We really didn’t want it to end….

Asia summary

Three amazing months in Asia flew by as we visited (and ate our way through) Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Japan, Hong Kong, Myanmar and the Maldives. Asia has always been our favourite continent and this trip reaffirmed it’s position at the top of the tree. Destination highlights Driving around the beautiful lush green hilly scenery in Northern…

The ghosts of yesteryear in Yangon

Yangon (formerly Rangoon under the British) was the capital of Myanmar until 2005 when, Than Shwe, the leader of the former military regime constructed a brand new capital at Naypyidaw, seemingly as a vanity project. It apparently has 20-lane motorways with few vehicles and not many inhabitants, apart from government employees. However Yangon is the country’s…

Naughty Ngapali

Our 11 days with Rach and Guy ended in the best way; three nights on the Bay of Bengal in western Myanmar. We upgraded our usual backpacker accommodation for the cheapest room in an expensive resort, situated on a prime stretch of the wide and lengthy palm-lined beach. It was gorgeous.  We spent our days lazing…

A cross-country trek with the Power Rangers of Myanmar

To get to Kalaw from Bagan we ended up on a cramped minibus, which was a right hand drive despite the Myanmar driving on the right (this article attempts to explain why but no-one really knows). It made for some pretty hairy overtaking on mountain curves. We were keen to get out and see some…

Biking around brilliant Bagan

After saying a sad goodbye to my dad in Hong Kong, we headed to the airport for our flight to Myanmar (Burma). Our 20th country and one we were both very excited about. At check-in we were delighted to find out, for the first time ever, that we had been upgraded. They must have been…

Christmas in northern Thailand (and a surprising day trip)

After nineteen hours of travelling (including three flights) we finally arrived in Mae Hong Son in the northwest corner of Thailand. Our joint love for the country (and southeast Asia in general) is well-known and we had been excitedly talking about this part of the trip from the start. So we had very high hopes…
